Penticton is a city located in the southern part of British Columbia, between the Skaha and Okanagan lakes. It was first settled by the Syilx (Okanagan people), of the Salish language in 1865. Its name was coined from the Salish/Indian tribe and it means “a forever place”. Penticton was made a district municipality in 1908, and a city in 1948. Does Penticton have any international relationship?

A sister relationship has existed between Penticton and Japan since 1977, making it one of the oldest relationships in Canada. It all started in 1975 when residents of Penticton went in a bid to look for business opportunities in Japan. They formed an alliance with the mayor of the town of Ikeda, Japan, who proposed a sister-city relationship with Penticton because of its similarities in winery production, geographic features, and cattle industry. This relationship has brought about an exchange of culture due to exchanged visits of residents to the respective locations annually. It also led to the building of a Japanese garden in Penticton, known as the Ikeda Japanese Garden in honor of their agreement.
